Elizabeth Brightwell

I am the owner of Canvas and Cork Wine Tasting and Art, and also an artist. I’m originally from St Louis and have lived in Dahlonega for 26 years.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My husband Tom and I have been married 33 years and have one son, Augustus.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I owned and operated the first used fitness equipment store in St. Louis, Instant Replay, before moving to Georgia. I’ve owned Canvas and Cork for 6 years, and really enjoy introducing people to Georgia wines and also bringing out their creative side with our art classes.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Caper’s Greek Restaurant and Spirits Tavern are our favorites.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived here 26 years and worked in the arts community for about 18 years.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
I would say contemporary folk artist Billy Roper.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
I’d love to travel to Scotland and explore abandoned castles and manor houses.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
“Laura” is my favorite movie. Film noir at its best. And Lonesome Dove is my favorite television production. I know every line.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Always have a plan B and the rest of the alphabet too.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
British canal touring on a narrow boat.

Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
Jazz singer Nancy Wilson

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Cranberry Corners. I’ve shopped there for every occasion since we’ve lived here.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Blues singer Keb Mo’. Would love to meet him. We’d go to Capers!

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
How people rally around those in need. All you have to do is ask and volunteers come forward.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Hopefully the same place I am now but painting more and doing less paperwork.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
That I am a certified weight training instructor and ride a Harley.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
The woods behind Harlaxton Manor in Grantham England. Absolute fairyland of ferns and old growth forest.

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
November. My son was born on Veterans Day. I love thanksgiving the most, low key but always pleasant and comforting.

Sleep!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Seeing the struggles of those in the chronic Lyme disease community of which I’m an active part, and how tough and resilient they are.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Gin and pipe smoke
